In the midst of an Indian summer, a beautiful stranger knocks on the door of Tunbridge Wells and sweeps into the lives of the Earl and Countess Vernon. The earl is captivated, and with her help he will soon recover his health. However, there is something suspicious about this ambitious beauty who knows so much about whales and appears to have no past whatsoever. Her charm threatens to disrupt all order in this genteel English society where everyone has their place ... as long as they know their place... My review: A gripping social novel set in Victorian England by today's most popular novelist for women. Johanna Lindsey's career has seen a meteoric rise with her last novel topping the "New York Times" bestseller list. Her readers have followed her from 'The Lion's Lady' to 'Man of the Hour' and now to this latest heart-warming story of aristocratic love. In 'The Seduction of an Earl', the Earl of Vernon, William Grant, is a handsome widower with two young sons. The author captures perfectly the English country house traditions so lovingly portrayed in Jane Austen novels. One day a local visitor, a Mr. Noble, asks for help in saving a whale that has been beached on land near his home in Kent. William can hardly refuse, only to discover that the lady whose help is needed is none other than his dead wife's sister. With her bright red hair and bright red lips, she has the whole town talking. This is not your ordinary romance novel; it tells another story of love and betrayal that would not be out of place in a Victorian era novel by Jane Austen herself. There are so many twists and turns through this twisting plot that you will find yourself reading long after bedtime. The beautiful photography of England's countryside by Efine Koppelblatt adds to the attraction of this read. As this novel keeps you reading, it is no surprise that Johanna Lindsey's career continues to soar. This reviewer highly recommends it and will continue to read and promote this author and her books. Disappointing, I had read every single thing she has written until I came across her last book. It was disappointing. This novel takes place in the 1800's in England, the characters felt contrived and portrayed as absolute idiots even though they knew what was going on at all times. There were no new or unique ideas presented, just the same thing over again with a twist of course to keep things interesting. I will be returning this book to the library. I have read everything Johanna Lindsey has ever written, but have never been interested in this type of heroine until now. This novel tugs at your heartstrings. I read her last two novels in one night, they are so good! This was a wonderful book to be charmed by! Bernard has had one big problem ever since he was little, he never smiles. He walks through life being witty and wise - but his mouth is always closed tight. So it's just as well that he likes to keep his mouth shut for interviews for work, or when meeting new people. cfa1e77820
